A Dolls House Essay - 790 Words
It has been said that, some people think that itââ¬â¢s holding on that makes one strong; sometimes itââ¬â¢s letting go. In Henrik Ibsenââ¬â¢s A Dollââ¬â¢s House, Noraââ¬â¢s departure becomes the controversial topic of debate for many readers; was Nora Helmer justified in leaving her husband and kids or not? It is argued that both parents are needed for a child to succeed in life and that separation is an act of cowardness. However, several readers also debate that Nora was justified in leaving Torvald and her kids. The mistreatment Nora constantly faced through offensive nicknames, her child-like mentality that made her unfit to take care of her children and her identity as a doll demonstrate her need to leave the Helmer household. Noraââ¬â¢s maltreatmentâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Additionally, this behaviour becomes evident when Nora offers to help Mrs. Linde and she responds, ââ¬Å"it is doubly kind in you, for you know so little of the burdens and troubles of lifeâ⬠(1.359-60) proceeded by ââ¬Å"you are a child, Noraâ⬠(1.363). Consequently, Nora responds in an immature manner by tossing her head and crossing the stage (1.702-03). Evidence of her childish behaviour and naà ¯ve mentality reveals the underlying need for her to grow and to do so she must find herself. In summary, the family nurse and Noraââ¬â¢s immaturity and naivety justify her decision to leave Torvald and her kids to find herself to gain the independence needed to become the mother that her children needed. Nora was a doll trapped in a doll house and if she did not leave soon she would remain there forever. Nora has been a doll her whole life; Noraââ¬â¢s father ââ¬Å"called [Nora] his doll child, and he played with [her] just as [she] used to play with [her] dollsâ⬠(3.608-09). When Nora married, she was ââ¬Å"simply transferred from Papaââ¬â¢s hands into [Torvald]ââ¬â¢sâ⬠(3.612-613) like the toy she was. Furthermore, the transfer of her was also a transfer of control. If Nora ââ¬Å"differed from [her father], [she] concealed the fact, because he would not have liked itâ⬠(3.606-07). In like manner, Nora concealed the macaroons she ate from Torvald because it would anger him, disrupting his control and ruining the appearance of his prizedShow MoreRelatedA Dolls House Essay1579 Words à |à 7 PagesThe play ââ¬Å"A Dollââ¬â¢s Houseâ⬠by Henrik Ibsen, makes several impressions about the perceptions of society and how women roles were defined during th at time.
